How-To Fix Huge Emoticons in Thunderbird
When I upgraded to Ubuntu MATE 18.04, I noiticed huge emoticons or icons in the subject area in Mozilla Thunderbird. They did not appear in the earlier version of Ubuntu MATE, so I figured the problem was a messed up setting or missing font(s) in the newest upgrade.
As you can see in my screenshot below, my sixth e-mail from Walmart has a huge white car and two huge red hearts.

After searching online and tinkering around with my fonts, I was finally able to fix my problem. Here's what I did. I first made sure my Mozilla Thunderbird program was up-to-date.
How to Upgrade Mozilla Thunderbird:
1. Open the Terminal (Shortcut: Ctrl + Alt + T)
2. Type the following command to add the PPA: sudo add-apt-repository ppa:mozillateam/thunderbird-next
3. Press Enter or Return and type in your password
4. Press Enter when prompted
5. Type the following command: sudo apt-get update
6. Press Enter or Return
7. Type the following command: sudo apt-get upgrade
8. Type Y and press Enter or Return
9. Type exit to close the Terminal
After a few minutes your Mozilla Thunderbird will be upgraded to the newest stable version. Open Mozilla Thunderbird to see if the problem persists. If it does, close Mozilla Thunderbird and continue to the next step.
Next you will need to install Emojione and Symbola fonts.
1. Open the Terminal (Shortcut: Ctrl + Alt + T)
2. Type the following command to add the PPA: sudo apt-add-repository ppa:eosrei/fonts
3. Press Enter or Return and type in your password
4. Press Enter when prompted
5. Type the following command: sudo apt-get update
6. Press Enter or Return
7. Type the following command: sudo apt-get install fonts-twemoji-svginot
8. Type Y and press Enter or Return
9. Type the following command: sudo apt-get install fonts-symbola
10. Type Y and press Enter or Return
11. Type exit to close the Terminal
You can also download and install the fonts via the installation files using the .deb package.
fonts-emojione-svginot_1.4-1_all.deb or fonts-emojione-svginot_1.3-1_all.deb
fonts-twemoji-svginot_11.2.0-1_all.deb or fonts-twemoji-svginot_11.2.0-1_all.deb
fonts-symbola_2.60-1_all.deb or fonts-symbola_2.60-1_all.deb
After I completed these steps, I no longer experienced these huge emotiocons or icons. As you can see in my sixth e-mail, the car and hearts are very small and fit wthin the subject area.

No more annoying GIANT Emoticons or Icons to deal with when I open my Mozilla Thunderbird.
It appears to be fixed.
