How-To Enable Screensavers
Screensavers have been around for a long time. They were originally designed to prevent phosphor burn-in on CRT and plasma computer monitors. Even though that is no longer a problem, we still see screensavers in use today. Screensavers can be used to provide an extra layer of security requiring a password to re-access the computer or they can be used for pure entertainment.
If you would like to enable a screensaver on your Ubuntu MATE system, then follow the steps below.

Step 1: Bring up the Control Center
Click on the System menu and then click on Control Center.

Step 2: Click the Screensaver Icon in the Control Center
When the Control Center loads, scroll down to the Look and Feel group and click on the Screensaver
icon.

Step 3: Select a Screensaver Theme
When the Screensaver Preferences dialog box loads, scroll down through the Screensaver theme
column and click on a screensaver. They are listed in alphabetical order. You can control how long it takes
before the screensaver becomes active by dragging the slider to the desired time next to the Regard the
computer as idle after. Click the checkbox next to Activate screensaver when computer
is idle to turn on or enable the screensaver. If you want to be prompted to enter a password before your
return back to your desktop then click the checkbox next to Lock screen when screensaver is active.

Click the Close button and you're finished. The next time your computer is idle for the time you selected, the screensaver will appear on your screen.
How-To Install More Screensavers
You can install more screensavers via the Ubuntu MATE Welcome screen. To bring up the Welcome screen, click on the System menu, highlight Administration, and click on Welcome.

When the Welcome screen loads, click on Getting Started in the Main Menu.
Click on Updates & Extras in the Post-Installation section of the Getting Started dialog box.
Scroll down until you see Additional Screen Savers. Click the Install button to install addtional screensavers. Then click the Close button when it finishes.
If you later change your mind, you can click the Remove button to uinstall the extra screensavers.
You can now enjoy the variety of screensavers that you have installed.
