Ark has a nice and clean user interface.
To open a compressed file, click on the Archive menu in the upper left corner and click on Open...
When the Open Archive appears, locate your compress file and select it. You may have to click the drop-down arrow above the Open button and select the type of compress file you are trying to open. Once your file is selected click the Open button.
You can now see all the files within your compressed file.
Extracting a Compressed File
Click the Extract button on the toolbar to extract every file within the compressed file. You can also select the files you want to extract from the compressed file.
Click the Extract button on the toolbar to extract every file within the compressed file. You can also select the files you want to extract from the compressed file.
An Extract dialog box will appear giving you options to where you want to place the uncompressed files. By default, the settings Preserve paths when extracting and Extraction into subfolder are selected. This means it will be uncompressed into the same path or location as your original zip file or compressed file but it will create a subfolder with the name of the compressed file or a name you type.
If you want your files in the same folder then uncheck Extraction into subfolder option. When you are ready click the Extract button at the bottom of the dialog box.
You should now see your files in the same folder as your compressed file.
Creating a Compressed File
Open Ark and click on the Archive menu in the upper left corner and click on New... when the drop-down menu appears.
Open Ark and click on the Archive menu in the upper left corner and click on New... when the drop-down menu appears.
When the Create New Archive dialog box appears change the location to where your files are located next tothe Folder section. Then type in a name next to Filename and then select your file type next to Type. Make sure you have the box checked next to Extension so that your compressed file will have the correct file extension added to it. Click the arrow to the left of Password Protection if you want to add a password to your compressed file. This means that you must enter the correct password to extract the files. Click the OK button when you are ready.
Now it's time to add files. Click the Add files... button on the toolbar.
Navigate to the location of your files when the Add Files dialog box appears. Select the files you want to add and then click the Add button.
You will see the files in your compressed file. Notice the information under Method. This shows the encryption method we selected, so we will have to enter the correct password in order to uncompress these files.
You can now see the compressed file in the same folder as our files. In my example the file is Test.zip.
As you can see in the image below, a correct password is required to extract the files.
You can install a newer version of Ark via snapcraft; however, it doesn't support your theme if you use a different theme from the default theme and it doesn't allow you to add extra plugins to extend the power of Ark.
You have 8 choices of creating a new archive file with version 19.08.0 the snapd version.
Meanwhile, version 17.12.3 installed the traditional way gives you 12 choices of creating a new archive file and it supports your new theme.
