How-To Fix No Audio
On March 19, 2018 I bought me ASUS XONAR DG Headphone Amp & PCI 5.1 Audio Card to put into my Ubuntu MATE desktop system. I disabeled my onboard sound card in my BIOS to prevent a conflict with my new PCI sound card. However, when I turned on my computer I didn't have any sound. I made sure that my Mute wasn't turned on and checked the obvious settings, but I still had no sound. After searching online, I finally found the solution to my problem.
If you are experiencing a similar problem, then follow the steps below to see if it will help you.

Steps To Fix No Audio:
1. Verify that your sound is not muted. Click the speaker icon on your panel to determine if your sound is muted.
1. Verify that your sound is not muted. Click the speaker icon on your panel to determine if your sound is muted.
2. Open your Terminal and type the command: alsamixer
After you press the Enter key the AlsaMixer program settings will appear in your Terminal.
Make sure the active sound card is the sound card you installed or have your speakers plugged into. In my case, I am using the Xonar DG sound card. Press the F6 to bring up the Sound Card setting dialog box. Then select your sound card and press Enter or Return.
I didn't have any sound coming out of my speakers because my output settings for my Analog Out was set to Stereo Headphone instead of Multichannel Analog Output. To change the Analog Out press the right arrow key until Analog Out is highlighted.
Press the up or down arrow key until Multichannel appears over the Analog Out. In the upper left the Item: should say something like Analog Output [Multichannel].
Click the File menu and click Close Window or press Shift+Ctrl+Q to close the AlsaMixer in the Terminal.
Now open your Sound Preferences panel by clicking on System menu, Preferences, Hardware, and then Sound.
Make sure that the sound card you have your speakers plugged into is turned on. Click on the Hardware tab and look to see if your sound card is turned on or enabled. My onboard sound card is disabled or turned off because I turned it off in my BIOS. Also check to see if your sound card is displayed next to Profile and that Mute is not checked and your Output volume is turned up.
You can cleck the Test Speakers button and test all of your speakers. Click the Close button after you test all your speakers.
Hopefully, you now have sound on all your speakers. Click on the Output tab and make sure your Balance and Fade are set for best sound. Since my speakers is a Logitech speaker set, I keep my settings in the middle. If you have a Subwoofer you can turn up or down on it's volume or bass.
This is the step or method that fixed my sound problem. If this doesn't fix your sound problem then proceed to the next step.
3. If the device for sound output shows a Dummy under the Hardware tab or Dummy Output under the Output tab then you'll need to
reload Alsa.
reload Alsa.
To reload Alsa open your Terminal and type the command: sudo alsa force-reload
After you type in your password and press Enter it will reload Alsa.
Exit and Reboot your system.
You should now hear sound through your speakers. If not, proceed to the next step.
4. If you still do not hear any sound then reinstall Alsa and Pulse audio.
Open your Terminal:
Type the command: sudo apt-get remove --purge alsa-base pulseaudio
Press the Enter key and then enter your password.
Type the command: sudo apt-get install alsa-base pulseaudio
Press the Enter key
Reload Alsa again by typing the command: sudo alsa force-reload

If you are looking for a new sound card for your system then take a look at the ASUS XONAR DG Headphone Amp & PCI 5.1 Audio Card at Amazon. This sound card is reasonably priced and it sounds great. It sounds a lot better than the onboard sound card.
Enjoy your Sound!!!
