BitDefender Antivirus Scanner for Unices is a free antivirus for individuals using Linux. This is free for personal use only. It can be installed on 32-bit and 64-bit systems. To install BitDefender Antivirus Scanner for Unices your system, you'll need to request free licence key from BitDefender. I provide a link below.
You'll need to fill out a registration form to register the product and receive a free license key. You only have to provide your name and email address. Make sure you check the Captcha code box "I'm not a robot" and and the "I agree" box below the disclaimer at the bottom before pressing the green Send button at the bottom of the webpage. Click the following link to receive your virus scanner license key: https://www.bitdefender.com/site/Products/ScannerLicense/
Within a mintute or two you'll receive an e-mail from Bitdefender with a link to download the program and it will also provide you with your Personal License to use the product beyond the trial period of 30 days.
After you click the link inthe e-mail you'll see a list of truncated file names. If you hover your mouse pointer over each of the linkable file names, you'll see the entire file name near the bottom of your browser. If you use Ubuntu or any its derivatives and you have a 64-bit system then click on the first file called BitDefender-Antivirus-Scanner-7.7-1-linux-amd64..> 19-Nov-2014 07:49 128M. Don't worry about the age of the program. The newest virus definition files will still work.
You may receive a warning saying the file may harm your computer. Ignore the warning by clicking on the Keep button to start the download. If you are using Google Chrome then you'll probably see one more pop-up that says: "Cofirm download This file may be harmful for your computer. Keep anyway Cancel" Click the "Keep anyway" button to allow the program to download on your system.
Once the program has finished downloading, open the Terminal and change the directory to the location you downloaded the file. All of my downloads go into my Downloads folder, so I will change my directory to Downloads by enter the following commds:
cd Downloads (Then press the Enter or Return key.)
cd Downloads (Then press the Enter or Return key.)
Next, enter the following commands in your Terminal and press Enter:
sudo sh BitDefender-Antivirus-Scanner-7.7-1-linux-amd64.deb.run
Enter your password and press Enter.
sudo sh BitDefender-Antivirus-Scanner-7.7-1-linux-amd64.deb.run
Enter your password and press Enter.
You will be presented with an End User Software License Agreement. Press the Space-bar to advance to the next page.
When you get to this screen you must type "accept" (without the quotes "") and press Enter in order to continue the installation process. If you don't, the installation process will stop.
Type Y and press Enter to confirm BitDefender Antivirux Scanner GUI package installation.
After the program successfully installs you'll need to reboot your system. You should now have a BitDefender Antivirus Scanner for Unices icon in your System Tools menu. Click the icon to start the program.
You will notice in the Registration Information area that the initial installation installs a trial version. You'll need to copy the key that was sent to your e--mail and then click the Set new key button.
When the License dialog box appears, right-click and paste your license key in the rectangle area and click the Set button.
Your Registration Type will change from trial to free. You will have an entire year of updates and fully functional antivirus scanner. After your year is up, you can resubmit the registration info for another year.
Click on the Update Now button to update your virus definition files.
After you update your virus definition files, click the Scan Now button. You will be prompted with a Select a directory dialog box. You can select any directory that you want to scan and then click the Open button. It will immediately start scanning that folder.
If the scanner finds any problems, it will present you with the Resolove Issues and allow you to delete or quarantine the infected file or files. Then it will go to the next tab Results Summary. You'll see the total number of scanned files, infected items, suspected items, disinfected items, deleted items, I/O errors, and scanning speed. My system had no treats or infected files. When finished reading the information, click the Done button.
If you click the Exit button it will close the program and it won't be loaded in the background; however, if you click the Hide button you'll no longer see the program's dialog box on your screen but it will still be loaded in the background.
You'll see an icon in your system tray to let you know the program is still running in the background if you clicked the Hide button.
