Ristretto has a very simple look. As you can see in the image below, it contains a title bar across the top, a menu bar with five menu options, and a toolbar below the menu bar. You can see thumbnails of the images in the current folder on the left and a status bar at the bottom.
You can navigate through your images in your folder by clicking the Forward or Back buttons on the toolbar. You can also press your right-arrow key on your keyboard to advance to the next image or press the left-arrow key to move back an image. You can start a slideshow by clicking the Play button between the Forward and Back buttons on the toolbar.
You can right-click on an image to bring up a menu that contains eight commands or features. The commands are: Open..., Properties..., Close, Open with, Zoom in, Zoom out, Normal Size, and Zoom Fit.
Here's a quick look through each menu on the menu bar.
You can uncheck the options Show Toolbar, Show Status Bar, and/or Show Thumbnail Bar in the View menu to give it a more simplified look.
Now you have a nice clean look to your image viewer. You can use your arrow keys to move through the images in your folder.
Here you can look through the tabs of the Image Viewer Preferences. There are five different tabs: Display, Fullscreen, Slideshow, Control, and Behaviour.
