Welcome!
This website is designed to help people that are looking for a different operating system (OS). I know that it can be very intimidating looking online for a replacement operating system because Linux has hundreds, if not thousands, of different distributions (distros). My goal is to help those that want to switch to another operating system, but not sure if Linux is the right choice for them.
On this website I will compare Ubuntu MATE Linux to Windows 10. I chose Ubuntu MATE because it is an excellent operating system for the entry to advanced-level users. It has a modern and easy to understand user interface. During the installation it has a wonderful Welcome screen that helps guide you through the initial setup. It also has an excellent Software Boutique that allows you to easily install new software by the click of a button. The Software Boutique has some of the best Linux software that integrates well with Ubuntu Mate.

Throughout the site, I will illustrate and explain how to use Ubuntu MATE and the software it contains to do your everyday tasks. I will also show you how to install and use other software programs, not just the software found in the Software Boutique. Before I compare Ubuntu MATE to Windows 10, lets take a moment to learn a little bit about Ubuntu MATE. https://ubuntu-mate.org is Ubuntu MATE's website. The website does a great job answering the question, "What is Ubuntu Mate?" On the website you'll be able to download an .iso image of the operating system. You can choose between Ubuntu MATE 20.04.5 LTS (Focal Fossa), Ubuntu MATE 21.10 (Impish Indri), and Ubuntu MATE 22.04.1 LTS (Jammy Jellyfish). The LTS (Long Term Support) version is provided with five years of support from Ubuntu and three years support from the Ubuntu MATE team. The other versions are provided with only 9 months of support. A new LTS version is released every two years. The non-LTS versions are released every six months. The version numbers are formatted as Year.Month. So 22.04 was released 2022 in April. The development code name of a release takes the form "Adjective Animal."
I highly recommend version Ubuntu MATE 22.04 LTS for new users or users that do not prefer to upgrade their operating system every nine months. Using LTS releases usually means you get a more stable platform, but it uses older software packages. I use Ubuntu Mate 22.04 LTS on my two laptops and one of my desktop computers. So you may notice some differences in some of my screenshots throughout the site. I use a variety of screenshots to help illustrate and explain how to use Ubuntu Mate and the software I have installed or plan to install. I also created YouTube videos and embedded them throughout the site to help teach Ubuntu Mate and additional software. I also use embedded YouTube videos from other YouTubers that helped me in my decision to use Ubuntu Mate in my Reviews section. I will give credit to each YouTuber so that you can check out their YouTube channel.
I was first attracted to Ubuntu MATE in version 16.04 LTS because it had the very popular Gnome 2 desktop environment look. It was a very polished system that worked great with older and newer computer systems. Ubuntu MATE 16.04 LTS used the traditional desktop taskbar that contained an easy to use Application, Places, and System menus that didn't take up a lot of screen. This was the most organized and efficient menu system I had ever seen and used in an operating system. The applications you installed on the system went into the Applications menu, the location of folders and drives could be found in the Places menu, and the applications that control your system can be found the in System menu. Even though this menu is no longer the default setting in Ubuntu MATE 22.04 or newer, you can still change back to the Classic Gnome look by setting your panel layout to the Traditional user interface in the MATE Tweak tool.
