How to Fix Authentication is Required to Mount
A few days ago my computer got an update and after that I noticed that I had to enter my password to gain access to the files on my multiple internal hard drives. I know this is not an error message; somehow, a previous settings got changed during the update.
Some people prefer that you have to enter a password to gain access to the files on a hard drive. If you kept your bank statements or important confindential documents on your computer, you might want to have your settings set so that you have to enter your password to gain access to the hard drive. However, I prefer to click on a hard drive and have immediate access to the files on it.

After the update, when I opened my Caja File Manager and clicked on any of the first three hard drives under Devices, the "Authentication is required to mount" appeared. To prevent that from happening again, I had to make some changes in the Disks utility.
To access the Disks utility, click on the System menu and then click on Control Center.
To access the Disks utility, click on the System menu and then click on Control Center.
When the Control Center appears, look under the Harware section and click on Disks.
When the Disks utility appears, click on one of your internal hard drives that requires you to Authenticate. Then select the partition under Volumes and then click the Additional partition options button.
When the drop-down menu appears, clic on the Edit Mount Options...
When the Mount Options dialog box appears, turn off the User Session Defaults and make sure that Mount at system startup and Show in user interface are checked. Then click the OK button.
Repeat these steps for each of your internal hard drives or for each hard drive that requires authentication. The next time you reboot or restart your computer, you should have access to all your files without entering your password.
If you prefer to enter a password to gain access to any hard drive then select the Require additional authorization to mount option. This will prevent someone from accessing your important documents or files without your permission.
Linux allows you to customize your system so that your system works like you want it too.
Have a great day!
