How-To Install New Fonts
If you recently switched from Microsoft Windows to Ubuntu MATE, you might have noticed that some of the fonts that you commonly used are missing. Times New Roman, Arial, Courier New, Georgia, and Verdana are some fonts that you probably use/used at school or work. Most educational institutions still require Microsoft's core fonts in assignments or projects. You can install Microsoft's TrueType core fonts on your Linux machine to improve compatibility between word processors, spreadsheets, image editors, and etc.

- Arial Black
- Arial (Bold, Italic, Bold Italic)
- Comic Sans MS (Bold)
- Courier New (Bold, Italic, Bold Italic)
- Georgia (Bold, Italic, Bold Italic)
- Impact
- Times New Roman (Bold, Italic, Bold Italic)
- Trebuchet (Bold, Italic, Bold Italic)
- Verdana (Bold, Italic, Bold Italic)
- Webdings
How to Install Microsoft True Type Core Fonts:
1. Open the Terminal (Shortcut: Ctrl + Alt + T)
2. Type the following command: sudo apt-get install ttf-mscorefonts-installer
3. Press Enter or Return and type in your password
4. Press Enter when prompted
5. Update the font cache by typing the following command: sudo fc-cache -f -v
6. Press Enter or Return
7. Type exit to close the Terminal
If the above method doesn't work then open your Terminal and enter the following information:
sudo apt purge ttf-mscorefonts-installer
wget http://ftp.de.debian.org/debian/pool/contrib/m/msttcorefonts/ttf-mscorefonts-installer_3.7_all.deb -P ~/Downloads
sudo apt install ~/Downloads/ttf-mscorefonts-installer_3.7_all.deb
sudo apt-mark hold ttf-mscorefonts-installer

2. Type the following command: sudo apt-get install ttf-mscorefonts-installer

sudo apt-mark hold ttf-mscorefonts-installer
How to Uninstall Microsoft True Type Core Fonts:
1. Open the Terminal (Shortcut: Ctrl + Alt + T)
2. Type the following command: sudo apt-get purge ttf-mscorefonts-installer

2. Type the following command: sudo apt-get purge ttf-mscorefonts-installer

Type the following command: sudo apt-get install ttf-mscorefonts-installer
Press Enter or Return
Type the following command: sudo apt-get install ttf-mscorefonts-installer
Press Enter or Return
Type in your password and press Enter or Return
Press the Tab key to highlight the <Ok> button and then press the Spacebar.
Press the left arrow <- buuton to highlight the <Yes> button and then press the Spacebar.
It will take a little while to download and install all of the Microsoft True Type Core Fonts.
It will display the message below when it completes the process.
Update the font cache by typing the following command: sudo fc-cache -f -v (I had to enter my password because I closed my Terminal.)
It will display fc-cache: succeeded when it completes the update.
Type exit and press Enter to close the Terminal.

You should notice that all the fonts in the bulleted list above now appear in your Office package and Image editors.
