How-To Fix "at-spi-registryd.desktop Not responding"
For the past several days, my oldest laptop startted popping up a "Not Responding" error message when I try to reboot or turn off my system. It doesn't do it everytime, but it does it enought to be aggravating. The program that appears to run in the background is called at-spi-registryd.desktop. AT SPI stands for Assistive Technology Service Provider Interface, a framework to integrate accessibility functions in applications. The AT SPI Registry is used by applications to interact with assistive technologies and peripherals.
If you do not need to use any of the Assistive Technologies applications, then you can disable it and then your problem should go away. Open your Control Center and scroll down to the Personal section or group and click on Startup Applications.
When the Startup Applications Preferences dialog box appears, uncheck AT-SPI D-Bus Bus to prevent it from starting each time your turn on your system.
Click the Close button after you uncheck AT-SPI D-Bus Bus application. Then reboot your system.
If you still experience this problem, open your Terminal and enter the following:
sudo mv /usr/lib/at-spi2-core/at-spi2-registryd /usr/lib/at-spi2-core/at-spi2-registryd.old
sudo mv /usr/lib/at-spi2-core/at-spi2-registryd /usr/lib/at-spi2-core/at-spi2-registryd.old
and
sudo mv /usr/lib/at-spi2-core/at-spi-bus-launcher /usr/lib/at-spi2-core/at-spi-bus-launcher.old
sudo mv /usr/lib/at-spi2-core/at-spi-bus-launcher /usr/lib/at-spi2-core/at-spi-bus-launcher.old
Reboot your system and your problem should be gone.
If you change your mind and you want to undo the steps above then go into the Control Center and bring up the Startup Applications dialog box and re-check AT-SPI D-Bus Bus and click the Close button. Then open the Terminal and enter the following commands:
sudo mv /usr/lib/at-spi2-core/at-spi2-registryd.old /usr/lib/at-spi2-core/at-spi2-registryd
and
sudo mv /usr/lib/at-spi2-core/at-spi-bus-launcher.old /usr/lib/at-spi2-core/at-spi-bus-launcher
I hoped this helped.
Take care!
sudo mv /usr/lib/at-spi2-core/at-spi2-registryd.old /usr/lib/at-spi2-core/at-spi2-registryd
and
sudo mv /usr/lib/at-spi2-core/at-spi-bus-launcher.old /usr/lib/at-spi2-core/at-spi-bus-launcher
I hoped this helped.
Take care!
