How To Convert TS To MP4 with VLC
A .ts file is is a Video Transport Stream file that stores video data. It's compressed with MPEG-2 video compression. It can be opened and played by a variety of video players, but the recommended player is VLC. VLC is a free and open source cross-platform multimedia player and framework that plays most multimedia files as well as DVDs, Audio CDs, VCDs, and various streaming protocols. VLC also allows you to convert a .ts file into a .mp4 file. If you do not have VLC installed on your system then you can go to the VLC: Official site and download it for free.
Steps for Converting TS to MP4
Step 1: Open VLC
I'm using Ubuntu MATE on my computer. Opening VLC on your system may look different.
Step 2: Click on the Media menu and select Convert/Save... or press Ctrl+R.
Step 3: Click on the Add... button in the Open Media dialog box.
Select the video file with the .ts file extension and click the Open button.
Step 4: You should see your video file under the File Selection section. Next, click the Convert/Save button at the bottom.
Step 5: A Convert dialog box will load. Click on the drop-down arrow to the right of Profile located under the Settings.
Select Video - H.264 + MP3 (MP4) option in the list. You may select from a variety of different output formats. You can later go into the Configure or Edit selected profile to make additional changes.
Step 6: You should now see the profile you selected. Next, click the Browse button at the bottom to select your destination location and to name the output file.
Select a location and give your file a name in the Save file... dialog box. Click the Save button when you finish.
Step 7: Click the Start button in the lower right corner of the Convert dialog box.
Step 8: Locate your new video file in the location you selected earlier.
Below you can see a comparison to the original .ts file and the .mp4 file. In my example the new .mp4 file is almost half the size of the original .ts file.
If you prefer the use AAC or AAC-3 Audio instead of MPEG Audio then click the Edit selected profile button in the Convert dialog box.
Click the Audio codec tab in the Profile edition dialog box. Make sure the option Keep original audio track is unchecked. Then click the drop-down arrow to the right of the Codec section.
Select the type of Audio codec your prefer.
Click the Save button when you finish.
After you convert the video file you will notice the Audio stream is now AAC LC instead of MPEG Audio.
The new .mp4 video file should play without any problems.
VLC media player is a great utility for converting your videos into a different format.
