How to Prevent Embedded YouTube Videos from Auto-playing
I recently noticed that all my Chrome and Chromium based web browsers would automatically play embedded videos on webpages. I also noticed that if I hovered my mouse pointer over one of the YouTube Shorts it would automatically start playing.
The solution to my problem was to turn off Adds/Trackers in the Malwarebytes Browser Guard extension for Youtube.com. If you have the extension then open your browser and go to Youtube.com.
Click on the Malwarebytes Browser Guard extension and turn off Ads/Trackers for www.youtube.com.
Here's a closer look at the setting. Let uBlock Origin handle the ads ion YouTube.
If you have any other website that doesn't work properly, I recommend that you turn off the Ads/Trackers in Malwarebytes Browser Guard for them too.
I also noticed some YouTube videos won't load or refuses to play with Privacy Badger enabled. If you experience this problem then click on the Privacy Badger icon and click on the Disable for this site.
If you continue to have problems with websites not working properly, I recommend that you uninstall Privacy Badger and let uBlock Origin block your ads and trackers.
If you keep getting the screen below then I recommend that you update uBlock Origin's Filter lists.
Click on the uBlock Origin icon and then click on the gears icon in the lower left corner.
Click the Filter lists tab across the top and then click on the Update now button. If it appears dim and won't let you click it, that means it automatically updated your filter lists.
If you use Privacy Badger, I highly recommend that you change some of the default settings. Click the icon and then click on the Gear icon to display the settings.
Within the General Settings tab, check the three options under the Advanced section.
Then click on the Tracking Domains tab and type youtube in the Search domains box. Change your settings to match the image below. Make sure that youtube.com and www.youtube.com is set to Block entirely.
Restart your browser and test out embedded Youtube videos and try out Youtube to make sure the ads message is no longer present.
As Youtube makes changes to prevent users from using adblockers the steps above may become obsolete. However, at the time of creating this website it is working.
